'Out of the Sand' - We are Saharawi

In 1976 the people of the Western Sahara were forced out of their homeland to refugee settlements in Algeria. Explore the ongoing plight of the Saharawi, their lifestyle and culture through film, talks, music and a jewellery workshop using sand and plastic bottles.

Part of Refugee Week; the documentary "Beat of Distant Hearts" (by Danielle Smith) on the role of arts in the Saharawi struggle will be screened.

Sahara Nights

Sandblast and Fairtunes invite you to Sahara Nights, the multi-arts Studio-Live launch on June 6 at London’s beloved Roundhouse (Studio-Theatre). We are very pleased to be joined by special guest artist Aziza Brahim from Western Sahara, a fabulous singer and percussionist who will be presenting songs from her new album Mabruk.

The evening compered by Dan Tsu from Lyrix Organix will include a spectacular line-up of live music and spoken word acts, with artists Ruby and the Vines, Inua Ellams, Luzmira Zerpa with her Family Atlantica, Lizzie Ogle, Karim Dellali and Mossi Conde in support of music-making for freedom through Studio-Live. Hispano-Saharawi singer Suilma Aali and young Saharawi journalist Asria Taleb will be present, too.

Audiences will also have the chance to be immersed in the Saharawi world through photography by Ed Harriman, Bernat Millet and award-winning Andrew McConnell and preview clips from two new films, The Runner by Saeed Taji Farouky and a portrait of the life and poetry of Lkhadra Mabruk, Aziza Brahim’s grandmother, by Noë Mendelle.

Screening of award-winning documentary El Problema followed by a Q&A with filmmaker, Pablo Vidal and Rabab Amidane, a young human rights activist from Western Sahara. Selected readings of Saharawi writings by acclaimed playwright and poet Inua Ellams and a preview of the forthcoming documentary The Runner. Participants who joined Run the Sahara in previous years also shared their stories and experiences, giving the audience a chance to find out more about the event, taking place next February, near Tindouf in SW Algeria.
